Anonymous Call Rejection

How It Works

To prevent blocked calls from reaching you:
  • Listen for a dial tone.
  • Dial *77 (dial 1177 on rotary phones).
  • Two beeps tell you Anonymous Call Rejection has been turned on.
To turn off Anonymous Call Rejection:
  • Listen for a dial tone.
  • Dial *87 (dial 1187 on rotary phones).
  • Two beeps tell you Anonymous Call Rejection has been turned off.
Things to Remember
  • When Anonymous Call Rejection (a feature included with Caller ID) is active, callers who try to call from a blocked line or who press *67 before placing their call will hear a recording that the call cannot be completed. On your end, the phone never rings. To talk to you, the caller may place the call again, without pressing *67, or unblock his line by pressing *82.
  • Calls that appear as unknown or unavailable will not be blocked with *77. They are calls coming from a long distance area or an area that does not support Caller ID.

Call Forwarding

How It Works

To activate Call Forwarding:
  • Listen for a dial tone.
  • Dial *72 (dial 1172 on rotary phones).
  • Listen for a second dial tone.
  • Enter the number where you want your calls forwarded.
  • When someone answers at that number, Call Forwarding is activated.
  • If no one answers or the line is busy, press the receiver button for one second and repeat the steps listed above within two minutes. When you hear two beeps, Call Forwarding is active.
To deactivate Call Forwarding:
  • Listen for a dial tone.
  • Dial *73 (dial 1173 and wait four seconds on rotary phones).
  • When you hear two beeps, Call Forwarding is deactivated.
Things to Remember
  • You can still place calls from a phone that has been forwarded.
  • If you forward calls to a long distance number, long distance charges apply.
  • Even though your phone rings once on incoming calls while Call Forwarding is active, you can only answer these calls at the phone to which they have been forwarded.
  • In some areas 72# and 73# must be used to activate and deactivate this service.

Call Waiting ID

How It Works

When you're on the phone and someone else calls, first you hear the call-waiting tone followed by a high-pitched tone. Your compatible Caller ID unit or phone screen displays the name and number (in certain cases, number only) of your incoming call. You decide whether or not to interrupt the first call.

To put the first caller on hold and answer the second:
  • Press the receiver button for one second. You can alternate between calls in the same way.
To end one conversation:
  • Hang up. Your phone rings. You remain connected to the other caller (if he/she remains on the line).
Things to Remember
  • Call Waiting ID requires a compatible phone or display to show the caller's identity. If you don't see any information on the screen, your phone or display is probably not compatible with this service.
  • You must subscribe to Caller ID and Enhanced Call Waiting for Call Waiting ID to work.
  • Where possible, Call Waiting ID also works for long distance calls.
  • "Private" or "Anonymous" appears on your display when callers have blocked their phone numbers.

Enhanced Call Waiting

How It Works

When you're on the phone and someone else calls, you hear a tone.

To put the first caller on hold and answer the second:
  • Press the receiver button for one second.
  • You can alternate between calls in the same way.
To end one conversation:
  • Simply hang up. Your phone rings, and you remain connected to the other caller.
To cancel Call Waiting for a single call:
  • Listen for the dial tone.
  • Dial *70 (dial 70 on rotary phones).
  • Listen for the second dial tone and continue placing your call.
  • When you hang up, Call Waiting is restored.
To cancel Call Waiting for a call:
  • Press the receiver button for one second.
  • Listen for dial tone and press *70 (dial 70 on rotary phones). You'll hear two beeps and will be returned to your original call.
  • When you hang up, Call Waiting is restored.
Things to Remember
  • When you hear a Call Waiting tone, the caller hears a normal ring.
  • If a third call comes in while you're using Call Waiting, that caller hears a busy signal.
  • Many phones have a "flash" or "link" button to activate Call Waiting.
  • To cancel Call Waiting through a computer dial-up connection, the dial string must begin with *70 and a comma, followed by the rest of the number. The comma pauses the modem for the second dial tone before dialing the number. This is important because if you have Call Waiting on a modem call, an incoming call signal can break your modem connection.

Caller ID With Name

How It Works
  • Your phone displays and stores the name and number (in certain cases, number only) of your incoming call.
  • All you need is a Caller ID with Name compatible display screen.
Things to Remember
  • In most areas, Caller ID with Name includes Anonymous Call Rejection.
  • Where possible, Caller ID with Name also works for long-distance calls.
  • Your display unit will tell you when callers have blocked the delivery of their phone numbers.
  • To activate Calling Number Delivery Blocking, press *67 (1167 on rotary phones) before making a call. There is no charge for this service.
  • Some states still have Caller ID with Number only.

Repeat Dial

How It Works
To redial the last number you called:
  • Hang up.
  • Pick up the receiver again and dial *66 (1166 on rotary phones).
  • After the recording tells you Repeat Dialing is active, hang up. As Repeat Dialing keeps calling, you can continue to use your phone as usual.
  • A distinctive ring means the line you're redialing is no longer busy. Pick up the receiver and the number you dialed will begin ringing.
To deactivate Repeat Dialing:
  • Repeat Dialing deactivates automatically if your call does not get through within 30 minutes.
  • To deactivate Repeat Dialing manually, listen for a dial tone and dial *86 (1186 on rotary phones). Listen for the announcement.
Things to Remember
  • In most areas, if you do not pick up, you'll hear the distinctive ring every five minutes, for half an hour (as long as the line remains open).
  • Repeat Dialing can monitor more than one busy number at a time, with distinctive rings used for each (Caller ID also shows which number has been reached).
  • If you hear a fast busy signal or an announcement that the call cannot be completed, then the number is not actually busy, but is either invalid/not working, is outside the Express Touch area, or has activated Call Forwarding.

Return Call

How It Works

To activate Return Call:
  • Listen for the dial tone.
  • Dial *69 (dial 1169 on rotary phones).
  • Listen for a recording of the last number that was called.
  • To call that number, press or dial 1.
  • If the number is busy, hang up.
  • Within 30 minutes, during which you can still make and receive calls, a distinctive ring signals when the number is available.
  • After 30 minutes without the distinctive ring, Return Call deactivates.
To deactivate Return Call:
  • Listen for the dial tone.
  • Dial *89 (dial 1189 on rotary phones).
Things to Remember
  • Where technology allows, Return Call also works on long-distance calls. Toll charges apply for any calls returned to long-distance or message-rate numbers. (This type of plan reflects per minute or per message charges. The bill shows minutes or messages, along with total charges.)
  • At any time, you can monitor more than one busy number. The same distinctive signal ring is used for all, so you need Caller ID to tell which of the numbers is available.
  • If you get a fast busy signal or an announcement that the call cannot be completed, then the number is either invalid, ID blocked, out of order, outside the service area, or has activated Call Forwarding.
  • Return Call works regardless of whether your last incoming call was answered, unanswered, or busy.

Three-Way Calling

How It Works
  • When you're already on a call, put the call on hold by pressing the receiver button for one second. You get a dial tone.
  • Call a second person. When you get an answer, press the receiver button briefly again and all three parties are connected.
  • When either of the people you called hangs up, you remain connected to the other person. When you hang up, everyone is disconnected.
Things to Remember
  • On phones that have a "Flash" or "Link" button, use that instead of the receiver button.
  • While you're using Three-Way Calling, Call Waiting is unavailable.
  • When the second person answers, you can have a private conversation before you connect back to your three-way call.
  • If the call to the second person does not go through, or if the person you want to speak to is not available, press the receiver button twice. The person on hold returns to the line.

Voice Mail

Listening to Your Messages

How to know when you have new messages:
  • Stutter Dial Tone
    • When you lift the receiver of your telephone, you will hear a stuttered or broken sounding dial tone when you have new messages.
  • Visual Indication
    • If you have a phone or Caller ID unit with a message waiting indicator light, then the light will come on when you have new messages
NOTE: The light may not be activated when receiving a new message until you hang up, whether you are on a call.

Sending messages using your mailbox
Answer (or reply) and Give (or forward) messages

Make (or create) messages instead of calling directly

Things to Remember:
  • Remember to press 9 to exit your mailbox each time you are finished using it before you hang up. If you hang up before pressing 9 your line will remain connected to your mailbox for 45 seconds, and you could accidentally reset your passcode if you pick up the phone again and dial another number within those 45 seconds.
  • You may change your mailbox greeting, name or passcode at any time by pressing 3 for User Options and following the prompts.
  • Your voicemail holds up to 15 two-minute messages (new and saved). New (unplayed) messages can be stored for up to 10 days; saved messages can be stored for up to 5 days. Your greeting length is 1 minute.
  • If your mailbox is full (holding a total of 15 messages), instead of your greeting, callers hear (your mailbox name) mailbox is full, please try again later. The system will hang up on the caller. If this happens, press * immediately upon hearing your greeting in order to access your messages.
  • If you are ever unsure what to do next, wait a few seconds, and the voice prompts will guide you with available options.
